Porter, Fousek running for eastern commissioner
By Angie Anaya Borgedalen
She made it through the August primary, and now Katee Porter has one more hurdle to cross in her quest to replace her husband Clay County Eastern Commissioner Craig Porter on the three-member panel.
Republican Porter faces Democrat Kenneth Fousek in the Tuesday, Nov. 4, General Election.
Fousek currently serves on the Excelsior Springs City Council and is a writer and historian. He ran unsuccessfully for county collector in 2006. Porter is an attorney and also owns Excuses and Cradle to Crayons, boutiques that carry women’s and children’s fashions.
Porter said that although she has not served in public office except as chairwoman of the Clay County Republican Central Committee, her background in accounting, business and law provide her with a solid base to perform the duties required of a commissioner.
“I’m running because Clay County needs a strong fiscally conservative leader who can guide Clay County into the future without raising taxes or cutting services,” Porter said. “Clay Countians need a leader who will not vote to raise their taxes and who will make sure money is not wasted, but is spent on essential services.”
Fousek said he represents a new kind of leadership that will give a Clay County a positive direction. Fousek said he was very concerned with the proliferation of tax increment financing and tax abatements for development projects throughout the county.
“I understand that TIF needs to be used sparingly, but it’s going to erode our tax base if we’re not mindful,” Fousek said. “Corporate America needs to start standing up for itself.”
If elected, Fousek said he would be a commissioner who listened to constituents and kept a watchful eye on the bottom line.
“Where does Clay County want to be in 25 years? How has the county spent its money? We, economically, need a balance between business, industry and agriculture for a stronger economy as well as to protect the quality of our air, soil and water resources,” Fousek said.
Porter lives in Kansas City North and has one child. Fousek is single and lives in Excelsior Springs.

" The Porters have held this position for years and most of the eastern district of Clay County don't even know who they are. Its time to elect a commissioner who represents all of the people in the eastern district. Fousek has been on the Council in Excelsior Springs and made decisions that have helped Excelsior Springs surge during a period when the rest of the area was waiting for the economy to change. Fousek is approachable and considerate of the needs of people as well as business. I am voting for Fousek because I think we need a commissioner with fresh ideas and the willingness to put people back on the Clay County Commission's agenda of priorities. "
