Veteran to speak about time spent in communist prison camps
Charles Plumb will talk at 1 p.m. Tuesday in Paola
By Kevin Gray, Staff Writer
As a continuation of the Paola Veterans of Foreign Wars observance of POW/MIA recognition day, the post will bring Kansas native Capt. Charles Plumb to Paola Tuesday.
Plumb, who flew an F-4 Phantom jet on 74 successful missions over North Vietnam, was shot down only five days before leaving to return home in 1967, and spent six years in communist prison camps.
Plumb uses the torture he experienced and other examples of what he faced while a prisoner of war and how he overcame the odds, as he speaks about Tough Choices in Challenging Times. The 1 p.m. event will be held in the gym of Paola High School, 401 Angela St. The public is invited to attend.
“Any veterans who would like to meet Plumb and be part of a picture should come to the Miami County Veteran’s Memorial at the northwest corner of Baptiste and Hospital in Paola at noon Oct. 14. From there, we will drive over to the high school,” said Pete Bell, who is coordinating Plumb’s visit.
“The American Legion Riders and the Patriot Guard will park their motorcycles lined up on both sides of high school’s entryway as a sign of honor, as Plumb walks from the drive to front doors,” he said.
