Holy Trinity Catholic School in Paola was filled with excited students, tugging their parents from one game to the next at a carnival Oct. 1 put on by the eighth-grade class.

Children of all ages jumped at the opportunity to play ring toss, snack on cotton candy and even get their hair painted.

Eighth-grade teacher Luci Kennedy said the event gave her students a chance to tackle a community service project as they prepare for confirmation Oct. 22.

The carnival raised money for the school, but it also taught the eighth-grade students about economics, profit margins and other things, Kennedy said.

Even the parents got involved in the fun.

Joanne and Mike Hoskins, who have three children at Holy Trinity, bought a cotton candy machine for the carnival, and they were set up in a back entryway, twirling pink puffs of sticky candy and handing them to students.

Joanne said she was proud of how the eighth-grade class took charge of the carnival this year.
