Perdue shatters school record by six strokes
By Scott Tittrington
A lingering illness certainly wasn’t part of Emily Perdue’s master plan for the first month of her senior year of high school.
That didn’t stop her from achieving a goal that’s been on her radar for a few years now.
Smithville High’s three-time state tournament performer added another individual accolade to her golf portfolio on Thursday, Sept. 25, at the Chillicothe Tournament, firing a school-record 88 while leading the Warriors to a fourth-place team finish at Green Hills Golf Course.
Perdue shattered the old record of 94 set by Amanda Vernon during the 2002 season.
“‘I’m going to get my name up on the record book.’ She told me that a couple of years ago,” said Smithville coach Pat Huke. “Not bragging, she said, ‘I am going to work for that.’ And she has.”
Perdue’s effort came as part of the top team performance in Huke’s tenure as the sole leader of the Smithville program. Dessie Lake (102), Abbey Vaca (104) and Katrina Zacharias (113) joined the senior star to place the Warriors fourth among nine teams with a team score of 407.
“In the 11 years I’ve been coach, we’ve never had a team score that low,” Huke said. “Overall, they were real consistent and consistently improving. They put 18 holes together.”
It’s even more impressive considering it was the first time this season Smithville was able to record an 18-hole team score. With Perdue in and out of the lineup in the early going, the Warriors were struggling to field a complete team of four players.
Now, with nine-hole matches Monday, Sept. 29, at Lafayette and today at Cameron the lone outings prior to the Class 1 District 7 meet Oct. 9, Huke is optimistic about his squad’s evolution.
“Each one’s starting to click a little bit,” Huke said.
Warriors fall
in dual matches
Smithville also played two nine-hole matches last week.
On Oct. 3, the Warriors fell 209-228 to Platte County while playing the front nine holes on the Posse course at Paradise Pointe Golf Complex.
Perdue shot a 55 to pace the Smithville, finishing second overall.
A day earlier, the Warriors fell 221-228 to Chillicothe on the same nine holes.
Perdue shot a 51 that day, again leading Smithville’s foursome and finishing second overall.
Huke’s squad also played in the Pirate Invitational on Sept. 17 at Shiloh Springs Golf Club in Platte City. Perdue finished fourth in the stroke play portion of the tourney, while Perdue and Lake combined to take fourth in best ball.
