Harley and Jackie Morlock know what their daughter would think of the candy shop’s first year.

“She’d love it,” Harley said.

And they know their plans for the shop’s one-year anniversary are ones that their daughter, Janelle “Nellie” Morlock Tebbs, would beam about.

The Morlocks are planning a first anniversary and melanoma awareness fundraiser for their shop, Nellie’s Sweet Shoppe, on Friday, Oct. 3. Events are planned at the shop, 115 E. Main St., and across the street in the downtown courtyard from 7 to 10:30 p.m.

The couple and daughter, Ronna Mack, opened the shop — where they make their own fudge, caramel corn and more — a year ago in honor of Janelle, who died in 2006 at age 44.

The sweets lover’s memory lingers throughout the store — in photos, a sign with her favorite

quote, “Take time to enjoy each day,” and much more. The store aims to raise skin cancer awareness in

hopes of preventing others from experiencing melanoma, which took Janelle’s life.

Event plans include music from Orange Picks 7, food from Brodie’s BBQ and a silent auction.

Proceeds will go toward three melanoma awareness, education and research foundations.

From the time the Morlocks had the idea for the store through this first year, nearly every aspect has been better than expected.

So many things fell into their lap. They had good luck finding space to rent, and generous people chipped in furniture, business cards, Web site design and much more.

“With everything that kept happening, I thought, ‘OK, This is all meant to be,’” Jackie said.

Harley added, “It’s almost like we’re supposed to be here.”

A year into business, they’re glad that word about the shop is still spreading.

Many of their customers are first-time customers who say they heard about the shop and had been meaning to visit.

They’re confident their mission has been effective.

“A lady was in, and she said she lost her husband to melanoma last month. She said, ‘I’m so happy that you are raising awareness and doing all of this,’” Jackie said.
