Farm Bureau annual meeting set Oct. 14
Century Farm, Farm Family and Natural Resources awards will be presented to Miami Countians
The 2008 Kansas Farm Bureau Century Farm Award will be presented to David and Barbara Wilson of rural Osawatomie at the annual meeting of the rural organization Oct. 14 at the Miami County Fairgrounds.
One hundred and fifty-two of the original 160 acres still belong to the Wilson family.
Goetelob Ackerly, David’s great-grandfather, homesteaded and farmed this land in 1879. Ackerly was born in Germany and lived in Bunker Hill, Ind., before moving to Miami County. None of the original buildings remain on the farmstead.
David Wilson is the fourth generation to farm this land, which is currently in corn, soybeans, wheat and brome pasture production.
The 2008 Miami County Farm Bureau Farm Family goes to John and Vera Dakin of rural Louisburg. The couple has been involved with Farm Bureau many years. John has served on the county board since 1993. Vera served as county women’s chairman from 2002 to 2005. Through the years, they have been strong supporters of Farm Bureau and agriculture in general.
Jerry and Alice Grandon of rural Paola will be honored with the 2008 Miami County Farm Bureau Natural Resources award. The Grandons, who farm west of Paola, have a diversified operation including beef cattle, horses, row crops and hay and pasture. Their farming practices include dryland and minimum till, and their commodities grown include corn, soybeans, oats and red clover. Water quality protection measures include use of buffer strips. They have planted 1,500 trees on 3.9 acres and along the river bank for watershed purification. In addition, 15 acres of wildlife habitat have been planted around the outer areas of the farm ground.
The Miami County Farm Bureau Association annual meeting will be at 6 p.m. Oct. 14 at the Miami County Fairgrounds building No. 2. The speaker will be humorist and syndicated columnist, Milo Yield. Reservations may be made by calling the Farm Bureau Association office at 294-5708, by Oct. 10.
