Hillsdale Elementary School teacher starts EARTH Club
BY TAYLOR COLLIER, taylorcollier@miconews.com
Students at Hillsdale Elementary School will soon get their hands dirty thanks to one fifth-grade teacher.
Teacher Beth Conner is excited to restart the Hillsdale Elementary School EARTH Club (Environment and Research Through Hillsdale). She started the club eight years ago with the goal to inspire young people to appreciate and enjoy the outdoors.
“And because I love the environment and the joys of nature,” Conner said. “I never tire of discovering and observing new things.”
The club is starting up again Oct. 7 and will be an after-school project open to fourth- and fifth-graders. The students will work on projects with the Junior Master Gardeners as well as Kansas Wildlife and Parks. Students will also take on a few of Conner’s own projects as well.
“They will do some good ol’ fashioned Beth Conner projects, too,” she said.
Conner’s first plan for students involves the trees around the school.
She said the Junior Master Gardeners is a program built around the same ideas and focuses that she has.
“They have developed an outstanding program full of ideas and things to do at school, so we can start an early appreciation and empathy for our environment,” she said.
The Junior Master Gardeners make recycled paper pots, share gardening ideas, build worm farms and host other fun activities students can take part in.
Kansas Wildlife and Parks is a supplier of artifacts, pelts, books, and a variety of supplies. Conner plans to use wildlife and parks’ services for ideas and materials.
Students must sign up for the EARTH Club, and Conner plans to take about 30 students.
“I plan to do some beautification projects in our already beautiful garden, tree identification, arts and crafts, nature appreciation and general ‘tree-hugging’ sorts of things,” she said. “I love doing these things.”
Conner is also planning an after-school program for first-, second- and third-graders.
