Plans are in place for the Northland’s first hospice house, located on the grounds of North Kansas City Hospital. A capital campaign is under way to raise $7.5 million to make the facility a reality by 2011, if not sooner.

Sue Svec, director of development for NorthCare Hospice, which currently provides home hospice care services, said the facility is needed with a growing number of clients and a population that is growing older.

“Right now we take care of 650 people annually,” she said. “Sixty percent of those people are in Clay and Platte counties.”

Svec explained that some clients need the degree of services a hospice house can provide, including pain management, patient assessments and care when health is rapidly declining.

A hospice house can also provide an alternative for someone who otherwise may have to be hospitalized in their last days, she said.

Svec also said that with the facility located adjacent to North Kansas City Hospital, there will be immediate access to any needed medical services.

The only hospice house in the region at this time is in south Kansas City.

Kim Logan, executive director of NorthCare Hospice, said the time has come for another facility.

“When the doors open, the beds will fill because there is such a need for this level of hospice care,” she said in a prepared statement. “Hospice House will fill a void in the community, and we hope the Northland and all of Kansas City will lend financial resources to this project.”

Svec said the hospice house would be in an existing building that will undergo extensive renovations.

“We’ll totally change the look of the building,” she said. “It’s going to look like a house.”

The house will have 19 beds.

Svec said the goal of raising $7.5 million includes funding for construction, contingencies (which often come with extensive renovations), first-year operations and charity care.
