Avila AD moves to commissioner
Longtime Avila University athletic director Mike Sharpe has resigned the position to take another athletic administrator’s position.
Sharpe, who came to the Eagles in 2001, is now the assistant commissioner of the Great West Conference. The conference office is in Chicago and the conference competes at the NCAA Division I level.
Sharpe will be in charge of conference compliance with the NCAA national office in Indianapolis.
The university in south Kansas City has shown growth in several respects during his seven years there. During his tenure, the school started its football and women’s golf programs and made a $2.5-million expansion to the Mabee Fieldhouse.
Athletic retention is at an all-time high at 79 percent and the student-athletes have a collective grade-point average of 2.97.
The Heart of America Conference named Sharpe Athletic Director of the Year in 2002-2003 and 2004-2005. He received NAIA Region V Athletic Director of the Year in 2005-2006.
Prior to his arrival at Avila, he coached basketball and saw a stint as assistant coach at UMKC.
