In honor of National Direct Support Professionals Recognition Week, Johnson County Commissioners will honor Johnson County Developmental Supports staff and consumers at 9:30 a.m. at the Johnson County Administration Building, 111 S. Cherry St., Olathe.

Kansas City Ballet offers a free performance at Ballet in the Park, which takes place from 6 to 7 p.m. in Ironwoods Park, 147th Street and Mission Road, Leawood. Booths will showcase costumes and props and provide information about the ballet. Overland Park Host Lions Club will hold a garage sale from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the Red Oak Hills subdivision, starting at 7015 Road Oak Court, Shawnee. Proceeds benefit projects of the club, which provides care, equipment and programs for persons with visual handicaps. The sale continues Saturday.

Saturday, Sept. 6

Johnson County Park and Recreation District’s 50 Plus Department will hold a pancake breakfast to celebrate the 110th anniversary of Old Settler’s Day. The event, from 8 to 10 a.m. at the Olathe Millcreek Center, 311 E. Park, Olathe, features Chris Cakes before the annual parade, face painting, and carnival rides and games. The Hugs Project hosts the second annual “Hawgs and Hugs” Sponsor a Care Package Event from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Westwood Apple Market, 4701 Mission Road. Proceeds benefit the Chris Anthony Brain Tumor Research Fund at the MD Anderson Cancer Center and Solace House, a local center for grieving children and families directly affected by brain cancer. Senior citizens group Ambassadors will meet at 11:30 a.m. at Shawnee United Methodist Church, 10700 Johnson Drive, for a potluck luncheon. All seniors are welcome and first-time guests are not expected to bring food. Jean Wiberg will play piano and sing. Tuesday, Sept. 9

Johnson County Park and Recreation District offers disc golf lessons, a class teaching the fundamentals of the sport, at 6 p.m. at Prairie Center Park, 555 N. Olathe View Road, Olathe. In disc golf, players throw a disc into a basket or target and travel through the course with the fewest number of throws to win the game. The district also offers a Disc Golf League for beginning and intermediate players, which takes place at 6 p.m. Wednesdays, Sept. 17 through Oct. 22 at Shawnee Mission Park, 7900 Renner Road. Boys in grades three through six can learn the fundamentals of lacrosse during a clinic being offered by the Johnson County Park and Recreation District. The clinic covers four weeks of instruction, drills and noncompetitive games, which are from 1:10 to 2:30 p.m. beginning Sunday, Sept. 14 at Blackbob Park, Field C, 14500 W. 151st St., Olathe. Bill Worley, who specializes in Kansas and Missouri history, presents “James Naismith, Inventor of Basketball” from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at Shawnee Town Hall, 11600 Johnson Drive. Naismith invented basketball in 1891 as a class assignment at the YMCA Training School. He served as chaplain and physical education director at the University of Kansas. Stained Glass Secrets, for ages 7 and older, is from 4 to 4:45 p.m. at Oak Park Library, 9500 Bluejacket, Overland Park. The Kansas City Museum at Corinthian Hall has beautiful stained-glass windows. Patrons can look at reproductions of these works of art – the shapes, lines and details – and be inspired to create their own paper stained glass creations. Participants will learn creative design concepts, hand-building techniques and wheel-throwing, including earthenware clay and kiln firing, in Potter’s Delight beginning pottery class for ages 16 and older.
