This year’s Spinach Festival takes place from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 6, at Sar-Ko-Par Trails Park, 87th Street Parkway and Lackman Road, Lenexa.

The festival, organized by the city in partnership with the Lenexa Historical Society, celebrates the green leafy vegetable that brought Lenexa fame in the 1930s as the “Spinach Capital of the World.”

Visitors can shop nearly 100 booths featuring art, crafts and antiques; enjoy activities including the spinach recipe contest, world’s largest spinach salad, games, children’s events, musical entertainment; and sample a variety of spinach-inspired foods.

For the spinach recipe contest, recipes and samples are due between 12:30 and 1:30 p.m. at the judging tent on the north side of Legler Barn. Judging begins at 2 p.m. and winners will be announced around 3:15 p.m. Prizes will be mailed to winners. Recipes will be considered for inclusion in the next spinach cookbook, fifth edition. Entry forms are available online or can be picked up at the Lenexa Community Center, 13420 Oak St., or Lenexa City Hall, 12350 W. 87th St.

In celebration of the festival’s 25th anniversary, the first 500 guests will receive a free green Spinach Festival tote bag, provided by Brotherhood Bank & Trust.

Admission is $1 for adults; children under 13 get in free. Satellite parking is available at City Hall and the business park located at 95th Street and Lackman Road. A free, continuous shuttle service will be offered to and from those locations.

More information, including a schedule of events, is available at www.lenexaspinachfestival.org or by calling the Lenexa Community Center at 541-0209.
