THE KANSAS Department of Health and Environment recently released the most popular baby names for 2007. Addison and Aiden were the most popular names given by Kansas parents for the year.

Emma, Madison, Ava and Hailey complete the top five most common girls’ names on the list. Only one name was added to the top 10 girls’ names: Isabella. In the top 25 names, Avery, Alyssa and Chloe were new to this year’s list.

Aiden is the top boys’ name for the fourth year in a row. Jacob was number one until 2004, but it is now number five. Kaden, Ethan and Jackson are the second through fourth names on the list. The only new boys’ name in the top ten was Christopher. Gaven made it onto the top 25 list for the first time.

THE INTERIOR of Cactus Jack’s Restaurant has a new look. The walls have been painted to resemble cracked walls and exposed bricks in a Mexican hacienda style. The decor really jazzes up the place.

SPEAKING OF paint ... I see the bus barn has been painted. I don’t know how long ago it happened, but I know it has needed the new paint for a long time.

RECENTLY I posed a question for anyone who might remember a story about a woman who cut her grass with a butcher knife. As usual, our readers came through. I had several phone calls, e-mails and visits from former neighbors and relatives who remember Stella Graham. The story was in the Western Spirit on Sept. 3, 1979. At the time, Graham was 89 years old and lived on West Peoria Street. She couldn’t manage a lawn mower and enjoyed spending time outside. Everyone agrees she was very particular about her lawn. Her great-grandson, Bill Russell of Paola, says she was concerned that lawn mowers could deposit weed seeds from other yards so she used a 4-inch butcher knife and a pair of scissors to keep the lawn trimmed. People remember seeing her sitting in her yard barefoot and wearing a dress as she moved across the lawn. Barbara Klusman, a granddaughter, found the clipping of the story and said that “reading the article again after all these years has again made me even more proud of my Grandma. She was a very determined lady.”
