Volleyball coach pleased with team
By Andy Brown, andybrown@miconews.com
The Louisburg volleyball team did what it was supposed to during Friday’s intrasquad scrimmage.
The Wildcat varsity downed the junior varsity in three games and looked good at times doing it. But now there will be no more scrimmaging — the rest of the way it is all for keeps.
Coach Jessica Smith and her team got the work in it needed and had good preparation for their season opener, which was yesterday at home.
“I think that the scrimmage went fairly well,” Smith said. “It was a good opportunity for the girls to get out and play in front of a crowd. They all had a few first time jitters so it was good to get them out of the way before the first match on Tuesday.”
Smith had a lot of questions going into the scrimmage and she got most of those answered as she got a good idea of who will take the court to start the season.
Seniors Cassie O’Brien and Chelsea Morland will be the team’s middle attackers, while Taylor Brown, Morgan Adams and Laurel Dixon will all see plenty of time as the right and left side attackers. Jordan Shearer and Lindsay Stacks are the potential setters and Mandy Mulich will man the libero spot.
“The offense looked fairly good,” Smith said of the scrimmage. “Jordan Shearer did a good job of moving the ball around to all of the hitters. There are still some communication errors that need to be worked out, but that should work out the more they play together.”
Smith is still trying to decide whether to run a 5-1 or a 6-2 offense, but those answers will come in time after she gets a chance to see her team compete in live competition.
“We are ready to put our offense and defense out there and see where we stand,” Smith said. “I think the girls are excited to finally get a chance to show what they’ve worked hard for during the summer and for the first few weeks of the season.”
