Football off to unexpected start

Stray Thoughts

It’s been such a busy weekend that this week’s column will just be some stray thoughts.

No. 1 — Football season has finally kicked off. KU got off to a pretty decent start with a win Saturday evening. It was a beautiful night for football. This is our fifth year to attend the games at Memorial Stadium, and the first game of the season was quite different from past years. The first year, the ’Hawks ended their season at 4-7. Last year, of course, the Crimson and Blue ended the year with a victory at the Orange Bowl. This year, a single-game attendance record was set with around 52,000 at the game Saturday evening. The first year we started going to the games, you could just about pick your seat. On Saturday evening, if you weren’t there by 45 minutes before game time, you might have a hard time finding a place to sit. And this was a non-conference game. Wait until Big 12 action starts.

No. 2 — Unfortunately for the Wildcats, their scrimmage Friday night didn’t turn out quite so well. Louisburg starter Drew Harding, who was a potential quarterback and/or running back, is out for about six weeks after suffering a broken collarbone. We’ll hope that doesn’t put too much of a damper on the Wildcats’ season this year. But I am looking forward to packing the newly renovated stadium. It will be great fun to spread out and cheer on the ’Cats this season.

No. 3 — What did we do before CNN? I’m not sure if the cable news television station is a blessing or a curse. Doug has been glued to the station watching the coverage of the latest hurricane to hit the Gulf Coast. It sounds like New Orleans at least caught a break this time with not nearly as much damage as Katrina. And it looks like we’ll be watching Hurricane Hanna hit later in the week.

I did learn one thing while watching CNN. If you’re a news executive and you’re going to send a television crew to cover a hurricane, you’d better make sure you’ve got a fat crew. I mean it. You need a heavy hitter. We watched a segment on CNN last night that showed reporters being buffeted by the wind. Even Al Roker, who is known for his size, was being blown around. The poor female reporter couldn’t even stay in the camera’s viewfinder. She was blown across the street during her report.

No. 4 — The annual Labor Day parade looked to be another hit this year. Residents and visitors alike packed Broadway Street to catch the action. That Collyn Peterson makes a darned good-lookin’ woman. Collyn donned a dress and a rather large posterior as he walked the parade route handing out flyers encouraging voters to pass the Louisburg Library’s bond issue.

I forgot to look to see what kind of shoes Collyn was wearing, but I felt bad for the clown from the circus that was also dressed in women’s clothes handing out flyers about the circus coming to town. He had sandals with heels, but the worst part is he had pantyhose on. Apparently no one told him women don’t wear hose when it’s 90 degrees.
