Louisburg youths take to the stars at Kansas Cosmosphere
Two Louisburg students recently spent part of their summers training to be future astronauts at the Kansas Cosmosphere and Space Center in Hutchinson.
Ambrose Stefan, son of Steve and Sherry Stefan, graduated from the Take-Off program, a five-day commuter camp with a one-night stay for children in third through fifth grades.
The program teaches the participants the principles of flight and how airplanes operate. Activities during the camp included assembling and flying model airplanes and hot air balloons, and viewing programs in the Carey IMAX theater and Justice Planetarium. Campers also got a behind-the-scenes tour of the Hutchinson Airport.
Kerry Maris, son of Joe and Marilyn Maris, graduated from the Level I program of the Future Astronaut Training Program, a week-long overnight camp for students in seventh through 10th grades.
The camp emphasizes teamwork, leadership and problem solving while students train in space simulators including the centrifuge, multi-axis trainer, space shuttle simulator and stress simulator. Other activities included practicing spacewalk rescues, launch homemade rockets and directing a robotic mission.
