Louisburg Library staff were on hand Saturday to assist job seekers in the area. The JobSearch Workshop included one-on-one assistance creating resumes and cover letters and an introduction to managing the KANSASWORKS employment resource directory.

Participants received a travel storage drive for saving the documents they created on-site and a Job Search Workbook, a quick reference guide with interview tips and preparation and sample applications, cover letters, resumes and thank you notes for effective communication with prospective employers.

“Individuals that came found people who were willing to listen and suggest a new direction for job searching,” Holly Gillogly, adult services coordinator, said.

Barry Garbrick, a representative from the Kansas Department of Commerce, demonstrated the KANSASWORKS directory.

“I enjoyed the JobSearch Workshop on Saturday. Rarely do I ‘enjoy’ functions like that, but I did this one,” Garbrick said.

KANSASWORKS is part of the SHARE Network, an exciting new partnership between the Kansas Department of Commerce and the U.S. Department of Labor’s Center for Faith-Based and Community initiatives. It is an online resource directory available at no cost that links community resources with the Kansas workforce system.

It is a comprehensive approach for obtaining, retaining or advancing employment. It is designed not only to connect customers to social services statewide but also to increase awareness of community services and resources.

Patrons spent as long as an hour with one-on-one attention, building resumes and cover letters. Some went to the library Monday to follow-up with Library Director Kiersten Allen, who helped with the project. Allen has taught resume and cover letter writing at the college level.

“Sometimes building a resume can feel intimidating, and it’s something we put off until the last minute, which then makes it even more intimidating,” Allen said, “I think it’s helpful to have another perspective and insight. We aren’t always good at telling others about our strengths.”

Louisburg Library joined the SHARE Network and there is someone available weekly, Monday through Saturday, to assist patrons who are interested in the KANSASWORKS database.

“This won’t be our last JobSearch Workshop. We got a really good response,” Gillogly said.
