Liberty High’s girls softball team bounced back from its season-opening loss.

The Blue Jays won four straight games at the Greater Kansas City Suburban Softball Invitational to win the second-place bracket. Liberty beat Blue Springs South 4-2 in the title game on Friday, Aug. 29, at Adair Park in Independence.

The Blue Jays pounded out nine hits against the Jaguars, including two doubles from freshman Chelsea Ross. Ross finished up the game by throwing in the seventh inning.

Liberty beat Odessa 3-2 in its first game on Wednesday, Aug. 28, scoring three runs in the seventh inning and holding on for the victory.

“Defensively, we played better than (Monday), but still not great,” said Liberty coach Scott Howard. “We were able to get some people on and use the bunt to move runners and scored three in the inning.”

The Blue Jays downed Winnetonka 6-1 in their second game Wednesday. Liberty had 13 hits and scored two runs in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings.

“We finally started hitting (Winnetonka pitcher) Lauren Sharp and getting the ball in play,” Howard said.

Liberty hosts St. Joseph Central in its home opener at 4:30 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 5.
