Cards miss chances
First-half woes add up in loss in First Down Classic
By Kevin Goodwin
The 47-yard field goal by Doane’s Dustin Groteluschen was the final blow.
But William Jewell coach Fran Schwenk wasn’t lamenting the kick, which came as the clock expired and gave the Tigers a 15-12 victory against the Cardinals in the Victory Sports Network’s First Down Classic on Saturday, Aug. 30, at Platte County High School.
Schwenk was frustrated with the first half, when Jewell couldn’t convert three Doane turnovers into more than six points, which opened the door for the Tigers’ comeback in the second half.
“We just had chances earlier to score and we didn’t,” Schwenk said. “If we would have jumped on them early, it would have been over. Whenever you let a resurging team with heart in a game like we did, it’s going to happen.”
Doane’s J.R. Artozqui threw three first-half interceptions. Jewell moved the ball into Doane territory each time, but could only come away with Garrett Withers’ field goals of 44 and 30 yards.
On one drive, Jewell had the ball on first down from Doane’s 3-yard line. But two false start penalties made the Cardinals settle for a field goal.
Jewell gave up the lead on a 1-yard run by Doane’s Timothy Reed with 7:46 remaining in the game.
A Groteluschen 34-yard field goal with less than two minutes left made it 12-6, but Jewell came back with a 77-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Drew Witman to Jarail Johnson.
An excessive celebration penalty — one of 15 penalties committed by Jewell for a total of 188 yards — made the extra-point try a 35-yard attempt. It was blocked, and the game stayed tied.
Doane moved the ball 25 yards on its final drive in the final 1:19 to set up the winning kick.
“We beat ourselves,” Schwenk said. “We have a good football team here and we are going to learn a lot from it. As long as we learn by it, we’ll be all right.”
