DePaul University student Laura Castelluccio of Liberty has been named to the dean's list for the 2008 spring quarter. To receive dean's list commendation, full-time students must earn a cumulative grade-point average of 3.50 or above on a 4.0 scale.
Adam Joseph Sharples of Kansas City received a Bachelor of Arts from Bradley University in Peoria, Ill., during commencement ceremonies May 17, 2008. He graduated magna cum laude. To achieve magna cum laude honors, a student must achieve a 3.6 or better grade-point average on a 4.0 scale.
Elizabeth Varnon of Liberty graduated from Drake University at the conclusion of the 2008 spring semester with a Juris Doctorate.
Kristin Coleman of Liberty has joined the incoming class of 2012 at the Oklahoma State University Center for Veterinary Health Sciences. Coleman is the daughter of Frank and Melinda Reed of Liberty. She graduated from Liberty High School and earned a Bachelor of Science degree in biochemistry and molecular biology from OSU.
Pam Rizza of Liberty has begun her third year of medical education at the KU School of Medicine-Wichita. For two years Rizza studied biological sciences in Kansas City, Kan. As a third-year student she will complete a four to eight week required rotation in the six major disciplines of Family and Community Medicine, Internal Medicine, OB/GYN, Pediatrics, Psychiatry, and Surgery.
Dr. Scott Falke, assistant professor of biology at William Jewell College, is a member of a collaborative research team studying the structure of anthrax toxin that may one-day result in a vaccine to protect humans from lethal anthrax infection.
Falke is a member of the research team led by Dr. Mark Fisher, professor of biochemistry and molecular biology at the University of Kansas Medical Center. The team’s findings were recently published in the journal, Nature Structural & Molecular Biology. Also collaborating on the study were researchers from Harvard University and the University of Missouri-Kansas City.
Missouri Western State University awarded the following scholarships for the 2008-2009 academic year to students from the Liberty area: Gaylynn Corrado, Corrine Hancock Memorial Scholarship; Lindsey Donnell, junior nursing major, Hardman Scholarship Fund; Erin Nichols, senior nursing major, Glen A. and Anita M. Miller Nursing Scholarship and the Opal LaValle Steward Scholarship.
John Ahlfield of Liberty, was named to the dean's list for the spring 2008 semester at Washington University in St. Louis. He is a graduate of Liberty Senior High School and is enrolled in the university's School of Engineering & Applied Science. To qualify for the dean's list in the School of Engineering, students must earn a semester grade-point average of 3.60 or above and be enrolled in at least 12 graded units.

Missouri State University conferred 599 degrees to students this spring during commencement ceremonies Aug. 1 at Hammons Student Center. Earning degrees from the Liberty area were: William Kretsinger, Bachelor of Science; Ryan W Miller, Bachelor of Science, cum laude, Honors College; and Nicho Steffensmeier, Bachelor of Science. Scholastic honors of cum laude are awarded to students who graduate with a cumulative grade-point average of 3.4 to 3.74 out of possible 4.0.
Two students from Liberty have been named to the dean’s list for the spring 2008 semester at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tenn. Those students are Kirk Austin Dryer, a Peabody College student, and the son of Darrell and Cheri Dryer; and Courtney Harris Rhodes, a School of Engineering student, and daughter of Bernie and Susan Rhodes. To qualify for the dean’s list students must receive grades equivalent to a 3.5 on a 4.0 scale for the semester.
Missouri University of Science and Technology, formerly the University of Missouri-Rolla, announces the following students from Liberty who made the honor list for the 2008 spring semester. These students carried a minimum of 12 hours and had grade-point averages of 3.2 or above out of a possible 4.0: Dylan Duane Delamore, Nichole Marie Hurd, Christopher Daniel Searing, Kyle Addison Van Vleck, Matthew Donald Marsh, Philip Shay Meeks, Christian Michael Pick, and Perry Danniger Smith.
Amanda C. Copp of Liberty was one of 3,594 undergraduate students named to the spring 2008 dean's list at Bowling Green State University in Bowling Green, Ohio. Amanda was a senior in the College of Health and Human Services during spring semester. To be chosen for the dean's list, undergraduate students must achieve grade-point averages of 3.5 or better on a 4.0 scale and carry no fewer than 12 letter-graded credit hours per semester.
Stephanie Pickett, a Liberty High School graduate, was recognized as an outstanding student by Drury University’s Biology Department. Pickett received the Robert Ingersol Award from Drury’s Department of Biology. Pickett was recognized at the annual departmental awards ceremony that honors students who demonstrate outstanding leadership and dedication to their studies.
Several college students interned for Dairy Farmers of America this summer. They worked in five offices and dairy plants throughout the U.S., and gaining experience in a variety of fields including communications, engineering, finance, marketing and public policy.
One of the interns is Brittni Coursey of Liberty. She is DFA's Dairy Food Products Public Relations and Communications intern in Kansas City. She will be a senior at Oklahoma Baptist University in Shawnee, Okla., and majors in news and information. After graduation, she plans to work in a corporate communications office. She is editor-in-chief of her university's yearbook, on the dean's honor roll, and is a member of the university's symphonic band. She also interned in DFA's Corporate Communications Department in January.

Brennan Canuteson, a ninth-grader this fall in Liberty, recently returned from Boston, where she attended a People to People Leadership Summit with fellow delegates from around the country.
During the week-long program at Harvard University, Brennan engaged in team-building activities, worked on an individual presentation for a community service project, heard professional speakers, attended workshops and visited significant local venues such as the Paul Revere House, the Old North Church and an exact replica of the Mayflower to gain a new perspective on what it takes to lead.
Programs focused on the role of adolescents as leaders, on politics, and on community service to help young people discover their own potential.
Brennan especially enjoyed the camaraderie.
“I got to know my roommate from Maryland and people from Illinois, California, Maine, and other states,” he said.
Brennan had been nominated for the program by a teacher at Liberty Middle School.
