Kansas Highway 68 is at the top of the county’s list when it comes to transportation projects in the next 10 years.

In response to the Kansas Department of Transportation’s request for counties and cities with a population of 5,000 or more to prepare a priority list, the county is doing just that. In Wednesday’s study session, Miami County Commissioners made it clear that recommendations coming from the corridor study of K-68 are the county’s priority in the next few years.

Miami County is partnering with KDOT, Franklin County, Paola, Ottawa and Louisburg to fund a $300,000 study of K-68 between Interstate 35 and the Kansas-Missouri line. The entities have hired a consultant, George Butler Associates, who is in the middle of a one-year access management study of the corridor. The study will be completed in March or April 2009.

County representatives will be attending meetings in Olathe and Pittsburg within the next month, following the passage of a resolution by the county commission formally stating the transportation priorities, said County Engineer Penny Evans.

By formalizing the priorities, the county lets KDOT know what money needs to be set aside for the projects in the statewide comprehensive transportation plan heading to the Capitol in Topeka for approval next legislative session.

“We want to carry the message and get our interests out in as many forums as possible,” Evans said.
