Hawks athletics types abound as all-academic, all-conference
By: Charles Redfield, Associate sports editor
Rockhurst University enjoyed a successful sports year, especially academically.
The athletes in all the sports combined for a 3.36 grade-point average in the spring semester. A total four of the school’s 11 athletic teams had a GPA of 3.60 or higher. The women’s basketball team led the way with a 3.66 GPA.
A school-record 123 athletes earned Academic All-Conference honors and approximately 78 percent of the school’s athletes posted a 3.0 GPA or higher.
The Hawks compete in the Great Lakes Valley Conference, an NCAA Division II conference.
They did not win any conference titles but did see 21 athletes earn All-Great Lakes Valley Conference honors.
The leaders were men’s soccer, women’s soccer and volleyball, with four all-conference performers apiece. Softball had three.
Sophomore soccer player Tom Heinemann proved the lone Hawks performer to achieve All-American honors as a second-team National Soccer Coaches Association of America selection. The forward scored 15 goals and six assists in leading the Hawks to the semifinals of the GLVC Tournament last fall.
Here is a look at some of the sports for the 2007-2008 school year:
