State races see many candidates on ballot
Kansas House of Representatives
5th District Republican ticket
Jeannie Plaisted: Plaisted, an Osawatomie Republican, is vying to face Feuerborn in the general election just as she did in 2006.
Plaisted served one year on the Osawatomie City Council before being recalled in August 2006. She also ran for Osawatomie mayor in 2007, but she failed to advance past the primary for that position.
Cynthia “Cara” Polsley: Polsley, an Ottawa Republican, is making her first run for public office.
Polsley is a student at the University of Kansas pursuing a double bachelor of arts degree in classical languages and antiquity. She earned an associate of arts degree in English from Neosho County Community College in 2006. She is also a former state legislative intern.
5th District Democratic ticket
Incumbent Bill Feuerborn: Feuerborn is a Garnett Democrat who has held the 5th district seek since 1994.
Feuerborn is a small business owner and cattle rancher. He is the ranking minority member on the House Appropriations Committee and also serves on Education Budget Committee, Agriculture and Natural Resources Committee, Joint Committee on Health Policy Oversight and Joint Committee on State Building Construction.
4th District Republican Ticket
Lynne Oharah: Oharah is a Uniontown Republican seeking a return to the state House after being ousted by his opponent, Democrat Shirley Palmer, in 2006. Oharah served one term in the House before being defeated last election cycle. A U.S. Navy veteran who worked for 31 years as a manager for Southwestern Bell, Oharah currently owns and operates a home improvement store and serves on the Uniontown school board.
4th District Democratic Ticket
Incumbent Shirley Palmer: Palmer is a retired school teacher from Fort Scott who will be completing her first, two-year term in the Kansas House. While in the House, Palmer has served on the Education Committee, the Veterans, Military and Homeland Security Committee and the Agriculture and Natural Resources Committee. Along with her 40 years of experience as a second-grade teacher, Palmer has served as chairman of the Kansas Board of Regents and as president of the Pittsburg State University Alumni Association.
43rd District Republican Ticket
Incumbent S. Mike Kiegerl: An educator and businessman, Kiegerl of Olathe is running for reelection to the state’s 43rd District House seat. He is a member of the Commerce and Industry, Health and Human Services and Judiciary committees as well as the Special Commission on Medicaid Reform. Kiegerl founded and served as chief executive officer of PRM Inc., a company consulting with state workers compensation agencies and private insurance carriers. Additionally, he owns HealthCare CostControl Inc. and Professional Real Estate Management Co.
Scott Snavely: Snavely, a Spring Hill resident, is making his first run for state office and filed a petition in May for a chance to represent the 43rd District, which covers Edgerton, Gardner and portions of Olathe and Spring Hill. A 1989 graduate of Gardner-Edgerton High School, Snavely is in his fifth year working for the Olathe school district, where he teaches ninth-grade world history and coaches football at Santa Fe Trail Junior High. He also serves on the Spring Hill City Council.
Kansas Senate 12th District Republican Ticket
Incumbent Pat Apple: Apple of Louisburg is running for reelection to Kansas’ 12th District Senate seat.
Apple, a Republican, is currently serving his first four-year term in the Senate as vice chairman of the Senate Utilities Committee and as a member of the Assessment and Taxation, Education, and Transportation committees and the Senate-House Joint Committee on State Building Construction.
Apple and his wife, Debbie, reside in Louisburg, where he owns Apple Electric.
12th District Democratic Ticket
Andrew Rickel: College student Rickel of Garnett will challenge Pat Apple for Kansas’ 12th District Senate seat.
A junior at Kansas State University this fall, Rickel is majoring in music education and minoring in economics. He is a graduate of Anderson County High School.
He has said he would like to focus on addressing health care, energy conservation and education funding issues.
