Movie and times not being listed in papers
On The Square
By Terrie Cole, tcole@miconews.com
HAVE YOU noticed the thing about the movies? The listing and times of movies at Dickinson and AMC Theatres are no longer available in the Kansas City Star every day. I discovered that AMC is doing this for a month to see what the response is. They feel most people go to the Internet to get movie information. The Chief and I, however, were in the car on the way to the movies with a newspaper in my lap when I discovered the movies weren’t listed. There is a phone number, but we didn’t know what was playing where, and we wanted to compare movies and times. That’s not easy to do on the phone. We ended up at the Great Mall and were the only two people in the theatre. Luckily we got there just as a movie we wanted to see was about to start. We saw “Get Smart,” and I didn’t think it was as funny as others told me they thought it was. After the movie, we ate at a Mexican restaurant in Olathe that we wanted to try. We were also the only two customers there, so we had excellent service. It was the Fourth of July.
A BEAUTY shop is going into the building renovated by Andy Martin across from our office on Pearl Street. It should be opening in a few weeks. A mattress store is coming to Paola, too. It will be located on Baptiste Drive. The UPS Store has opened in the new shopping center behind the Best Western hotel.
I'M TRYING to do the right thing and use cloth bags when I shop, but it’s not as easy as it seems. Wal-Mart has checkout lanes where you can check yourself out. But it requires you to put your purchase in their plastic bags. The machine knows if you don’t put your purchase in the bag. And if you hit the skip bagging button more than three times, it requires a cashier to come and push a few buttons. That is a real pain when you are buying dog food or cases of pop that won’t fit into the bags. I like the convenience of checking out myself and not having to wait in line, but there are several aspects of it that I don’t like. For example, the woman’s voice that keeps egging you on. The plastic bags are almost impossible to get open and while I’m struggling, a voice keeps telling me, “Please put the item in the bag.”
I HAVE a confession to make. It totally grosses me out when people clip their nails in public. I don’t mind if you are fixing a broken nail or clipping a hangnail, but some people do a full manicure in the most public of places. Where do these people think those nail clippings go? I clip over a trash can in my own bathroom, and even then, I can’t be sure the clippings all get in there. Just thinking about where the clippings of those public nail clippers might end up (my drink, my hair) gives me the willies.
